THE SECURITY OF IDENTITY: THE ULTIMATE SOLUTION TO NIGERIA’S INSECURITY CHALLENGES

Our Greatest Insecurity Is the Security of Collective Identity

There comes a moment in the life of every nation when it must courageously ask itself a question more important than politics, more important than economics, more important than power, and even more important than security itself.

That question is:

WHO ARE WE?

Not where are we from.

Not what tribe do we belong to.

Not what religion do we profess.

Not what language do we speak.

But Who Are We As One People?

The answer to this question determines the Destiny of Nations.

History reveals that the strongest nations on earth did not become strong merely because they possessed natural resources, military power, technological superiority, or economic wealth. They became strong because they first answered the question of Collective Identity.

They knew who they were.

They knew what united them.

They knew what they stood for.

They knew what they were willing to sacrifice for.

They possessed what may be called the Security of Identity.

Nigeria’s greatest challenge since independence has not been a lack of resources, intelligence, population, talent, religion, culture, or opportunities.

Our greatest challenge has been the absence of a sufficiently secured and consciously cultivated National Identity.

We have attempted to build a nation without first building the Spirit of Nationhood.

We have sought national development without first securing National Consciousness.

We have pursued political unity without first Establishing Psychological Unity.

As a result, Nigeria has continuously struggled with various forms of insecurity because beneath every visible insecurity lies a deeper invisible insecurity – the insecurity of identity.

The True Meaning of National Security

Most people misunderstand national security.

They imagine soldiers, weapons, intelligence agencies, surveillance systems, military hardware, armored vehicles, and security operations.

These are important.

But they are not the foundation of security.

They are merely instruments of security.

True national security begins long before soldiers are deployed.

True national security exists when the people themselves become defenders of the nation because they see the nation as an extension of themselves.

A nation is truly secure when its citizens instinctively protect it because its success is their success and its pain is their pain.

The strongest defense system ever created is not military.

It is Psychological.

It is Spiritual.

It is Emotional.

It is Identity.

When people genuinely believe that they belong to one collective destiny, they naturally cooperate against threats.

They share information.

They defend public institutions.

They resist division.

They reject extremism.

They protect one another.

They place national interest above sectional interest.

Such a nation becomes difficult to destroy.

For this reason, the highest form of national security is not military security.

It is Identity Security.

What Is National Identity?

National identity is the shared understanding of who a people are collectively.

It is the invisible thread connecting millions of individuals into one living entity.

National identity is the answer to the question:

“What does it mean to be one of us?”

When a child is born into a nation with a strong identity, that child immediately inherits a clear sense of belonging.

The child knows:

This is my people.

This is my story.

This is my responsibility.

This is my future.

This is my nation.

Identity transforms population into people.

Identity transforms territory into homeland.

Identity transforms citizens into patriots.

Identity transforms diversity into unity.

Identity transforms individuals into a nation.

Without identity, people merely occupy the same geographical space.

With identity, they become one collective force.

The Crisis of Nigerian Identity

Nigeria possesses extraordinary diversity.

Hundreds of ethnic groups.

Numerous languages.

Different cultures.

Different traditions.

Different religious beliefs.

This diversity is not our weakness.

It is one of humanity’s greatest treasures.

The challenge is that we have not yet successfully woven these diversities into one compelling national story capable of inspiring every Nigerian.

Many Nigerians still primarily identify themselves through ethnic, religious, regional, political, or sectional lenses before identifying themselves as Nigerians.

This creates fragmentation of loyalty.

When identity becomes fragmented, trust becomes fragmented.

When trust becomes fragmented, cooperation becomes fragmented.

When cooperation becomes fragmented, development becomes fragmented.

And when development becomes fragmented, insecurity emerges.

The consequence is visible everywhere.

Ethnic suspicion.

Religious tension.

Political polarization.

Regional mistrust.

Weak civic consciousness.

Low institutional confidence.

Poor national cohesion.

These are not separate problems.

They are symptoms of one deeper challenge – the crisis of national identity.

The Collateral Effects of Identity Insecurity

Identity insecurity affects everything.

It affects governance.

It affects leadership.

It affects economic growth.

It affects education.

It affects social stability.

It affects national development.

It affects patriotism.

It affects security.

A people uncertain about who they are collectively often struggle to agree on where they are going collectively.

A nation divided within itself expends enormous energy managing internal divisions rather than building collective greatness.

The greatest loss is not material.

The greatest loss is psychological.

Millions of citizens become disconnected from the national project.

They stop seeing themselves as stakeholders.

The nation becomes “them” instead of “us.”

At that point, development slows because collective purpose weakens.

The Indomitable Power of a Unifying Identity

The greatest power available to humanity is neither military power nor economic power.

It is the Power of Collective Identity.

When people genuinely see themselves as one, extraordinary things become possible.

A united people can overcome poverty.

A united people can overcome insecurity.

A united people can overcome political instability.

A united people can overcome external threats.

A united people can overcome seemingly impossible challenges.

History repeatedly demonstrates that nations with strong identities often outperform nations with greater resources but weaker unity.

This is because identity creates collective energy.

It aligns minds.

It aligns hearts.

It aligns efforts.

It aligns aspirations.

It aligns sacrifice.

It aligns destiny.

The result is a force far greater than the sum of individual contributions.

The result is national synergy.

The result is civilization-building power.

The Ultimate Solution

The ultimate solution to Nigeria’s long-term insecurity challenges is the conscious creation, cultivation, protection, and transmission of a unifying Nigerian identity.

This does not require the destruction of ethnic identities.

It does not require the abandonment of religious beliefs.

It does not require cultural uniformity.

Rather, it requires the creation of a higher identity capable of accommodating all legitimate differences.

The objective is simple:

To create a Nigeria where every citizen can proudly say:

“I am Yoruba and Nigerian.”

“I am Hausa and Nigerian.”

“I am Igbo and Nigerian.”

“I am Tiv and Nigerian.”

“I am Ijaw and Nigerian.”

“I am Fulani and Nigerian.”

“I am Christian and Nigerian.”

“I am Muslim and Nigerian.”

“I am traditionalist and Nigerian.”

With all due respect and equal recognition – same applies to all other beautiful ethnic groups.

But above all:

“I belong to Nigeria, and Nigeria belongs to me.”

This is the identity revolution Nigeria urgently needs.

The Most Important Responsibility of Our Generation

Every generation receives a historic assignment.

Some generations fight wars.

Some generations build institutions.

Some generations create wealth.

Our generation has received a different assignment.

We Must Build the Nigerian identity.

We must consciously create the psychological foundation upon which future generations will build prosperity, stability, innovation, and greatness.

This task is more important than political victories.

More important than natural resources.

More important than temporary economic gains.

More important than partisan interests.

Because when identity is secured, everything else becomes easier to build.

But when identity remains insecure, every achievement remains vulnerable.

The greatest gift we can leave to generations yet unborn is not wealth.

It is not infrastructure.

It is not political power.

It is a nation whose people genuinely see themselves as One.

The Call of History

Nigeria stands at a historic crossroads.

The future will not be determined merely by policies, elections, or economic reforms.

The future will ultimately be determined by whether Nigerians can answer the most important question of nationhood:

Who are we?

When we answer that question collectively, sincerely, and courageously, a New Nigeria will emerge.

A Nigeria stronger than its divisions.

A Nigeria greater than its challenges.

A Nigeria united in purpose.

A Nigeria secure in identity.

A Nigeria confident in destiny.

For the security of identity is the foundation of every other security.

And when a people discover the power of a shared identity, they unleash the most formidable force known to humanity – the Indomitable Power of Oneness.

If our generation succeeds in securing this unifying identity, we shall have fulfilled one of the highest responsibilities ever entrusted to a people.

The beneficiaries will not only be present-day Nigerians.

The beneficiaries will be generations yet unborn.

The beneficiaries will be Africa.

The beneficiaries will be humanity itself.

For nations rise when people discover who they are.

And greatness begins when a people become One.
